The "Safe Drive Save Life" program is a major road safety initiative by the Government of West Bengal. Created to address the rising number of accidents caused by irresponsible and reckless driving, the program aims to build a culture of safe driving across all sections of society, with a strong focus on the youth. Through campaigns, rallies, and educational activities, the government works to raise awareness about responsible driving practices.
During the annual Road Safety Week, traffic units across West Bengal conduct extensive awareness drives across different districts. These campaigns educate the public on essential safe driving habits, emphasizing seat belt use, avoiding mobile phones while driving, wearing helmets on two-wheelers, maintaining up-to-date documents, and avoiding alcohol consumption while driving.
A key highlight of Road Safety Week is the daily organization of rallies and road processions conducted by the traffic police, supported by Civic Volunteers and the local community. These processions, featuring banners and placards promoting safe driving, help spread the message effectively through collaboration with local residents and drivers.
Recognizing the importance of early awareness, many schools and colleges actively participate in the "Safe Drive Save Life" program. Traffic Guards conduct workshops and special sessions aimed at instilling responsibility and road safety awareness among young drivers and pedestrians, shaping them into safer future road users.
The program also extends into broader community involvement. Interactive sessions, feedback channels, and meetings with residents, business owners, drivers, and syndicates help foster a shared understanding of road safety challenges. This collaborative approach strengthens collective responsibility for safer roads.
The Darjeeling Traffic Police have been strong advocates of the Safe Drive Save Life program. From 2021 to the present, they have conducted an impressive 912 programs and rallies, with efforts continuing actively. Their dedication has significantly contributed to improving road safety in the region and stands as an example for others.
The "Safe Drive Save Life" initiative is more than a campaign—it is a commitment to saving lives on the road. Through education, community involvement, and reinforcement of safe driving practices, the program promotes a culture of shared responsibility. With Darjeeling leading by example, the impact of the initiative continues to grow, influencing safer behaviour and inspiring long-term change.
